3-4 September 2010 - Wingham Eventing CNC One Day Report

Fears of a rain-soaked event were unfounded as Wingham Eventing Club’s fourth ODE was held in dry (if somewhat blustery conditions) on 4th-5th September. Dressage and show jumping were held at Taree Showgrounds where most competitors could enjoy the luxury of riding their dressage on surfaced (rather than grass) arenas. The judges commented on the high quality of the dressage horses in the P/N and One Star and there were some lovely tests ridden by Junior Newcomers Layne Ross, Rachel Lollback and Chelsea Kay who retained their dressage top three for the final results of the event. Frank McClements built an inviting jump course, which encouraged good turns and allowed correct approaches for the greener horses.

There were some changes made to the cross-country course to make it slightly more testing, but as it was still well-flowing, it remained very encouraging to the horses and friendly to the riders. The One Star class was won by Emma Armstrong, who bought a strong team of horses to the competition. She won a stallion service to Paris Hill (standing at Bellview Park) as part of her prize. Second place in the One Star was Belinda Bailey, who somehow managed to ride, as well as run the Event. The Pre Novice was won by Junior Squad Rider Caitlin Foulis and the Preliminary class was won by Joel Funnell, who retained his early dressage lead, with second place going to popular Wingham Eventing Club combination, Joanne Perrottet and Oscar, who also won the Senior Member’s award. The Introductory class was also won by a Junior, Elissa Rowston. Second place went to Adora Roberts and Tallyho Arizona, proving that good deeds do go unpunished, as Tallyho Trakehner Stud had donated a stallion service as a prize for the event. Natalya Bretherton and the colourful Paint, Dressed in a Rush, were the Newcomers winners and the winner of the Junior Newcomers was Layne Ross, who was also the Junior Members winner. The Encourager class, which was held for the first time at this event, was won by Junior rider Leia Rogers and Swoop.

So thank you to all competitors for making the trip to our competition – we hope you enjoyed yourselves. Thanks must of course go to all our sponsors, Technical Director, Norm Hindmarsh, other officials and everyone who volunteered to contribute in any way to the successful running of this event. We would like to say thank you to Vicki Burgess for all her assistance with event preparation (especially as she was heading overseas prior to the event). We look forward to the next Wingham ODE (with Vicky Burgess back in the Secretary’s Office)!

Showjumping Training Day

Wingham Eventing Club held the first of our planned Show Jumping Training Days at Taree Showground on Saturday July 3rd.

Belinda set the course to suit everyone - starting at 50cm with open lines, it allowed those riders whose horses could only trot over fences to obtain some confidence of jumping a course.

Belinda gradually heightened and widened the fences, adding more fill, dazzle and verticals as the experienced horses and riders came out to jump. Many riders took the opportunity to have Belinda assist them with their style of jumping and approach to their rounds. These days are planned to provide an ideal training ground for show jumping novice horses and ponies, but also give schooling experience for those able to manage over 1.10m. Our next show jumping training day will be held on 14th August.
